Resizing pictures with IrfanView (free software).
Download it HERE

There are many reasons people need to resize pictures. Here's a typical one: Suppose you want to reduce the size (dimensions, not necessarily the file size in bytes) of some pictures you shot from a digital camera. Lets also suppose you're building a web page where people can view thumbnails, then click on these thumbnails to reveal a much larger picture.

You will need to create two new sets of pictures:
1) A thumbnail size set (for people to click on)
2) A somewhat bigger size set for the enlarged pictures.
We will also create a third folder that stores a copy of the original pictures.

[NOTE: This tutorial assumes you have a basic knowledge of Windows Explorer, copying and pasting files, and an understanding of where on your hard drive you will store files, etc...]

Let's begin!

Step 1 - Create Folders
Here you see Windows Explorer displaying the three folders. (Jump to Step 2 now if you know how to create these folders).

You can display Explorer by pressing the following keys:
Select the folder where you will be creating the three new folders.

Create three new folders by right clicking while the pointer is in the blank area. Choose New, then Folder. Here I name them:

Ori
(files that are the original files from the camera), Small (thumbnails, currently empty), and
Big
(currently empty also).

Copy
the pictures (for example, from the digital camera) you want to work with into the Ori folder.

We'll use IrfanView (I'll call it IV from now on) to reduce and store the reduced files into Small and Big.

Step 2 - Launch IV
Here you see the blank screen of IV. Exciting eh?

Now hit the 'b' key. This takes you into batch mode.
Step 3 - Find Source Files
Click the "down arrow" (see red arrow pictured below) to find your original, untouched files from the Ori folder you made earlier.
Step 4 - Selecting files of interest
In order for IV to convert files, they must be listed on the LEFT window pane. From the files displayed in RIGHT pane, we must select our files of interest and get them to show up on the LEFT pane. For this example we want to work with all the files. Click "Add All" (see red arrow pictured below). This is how it should look:
Look at the lower left "Work As:" section. 'Batch Conversion' should be selected. If it's NOT, select it now.
Step 5 - Choose an output directory
Click on Browse. Choose Small, then OK.
